My KTM Commuter Experience

It's Monday and public holiday due to the Chinese New Year so I've decided to go and meet my friend in Klang. Since it's quite far for me to drive alone, I just take the commuter. It's been quite so long since I last travel using the commuter.

Even the route has expanding from before. The last station used to be Sentul and Seremban but now it's Batu Caves and Sg. Gadut. Never heard of Sg. Gadut before. When an old man was asking which train he should take in order to go to Seremban and he mentioned Sg. Gadut, I was like..huh?! Even I need to ask the counter which lane should I go in order to take the train to Klang...so pathetic! Feels like a tourist and badly needed a map!

It took almost 30 minutes for the Pelabuhan Klang train to arrive and when I enter the coach, it was really scary! There's only few ladies around and I'm surrounded by foreigners from Indonesia, Bangladesh etc. Feels like a total strangers in my own beloved country! Barely see our own people in that coach and of course the one hour journey feels like forever to arrive being stuck with all man and foreigners...feels so threatened! It was actually my own fault for just stepping in into the coach that's not meant only for ladies for I'm not aware that every commuter train has its own ladies coach. I didn't see the pink color coach and thought maybe the train did't have the specific coach, just following a girl stepping into that coach who's actually with her boyfriend who can protect her. Each girl who's in that coach was actually with their boyfriends and I'm the only one alone.

It's a lesson learn for me today. A new experience. Next time I'm not going to step into any other coach other than the one especially for LADIES!

Gong Xi Fa Cai!

Wishing all the Chinese readers and friends a Happy and Prosperous Chinese New Year. May the year of dragon bring them good fortune, happiness, strength and luck!

Am searching for suitable prezzie for my little niece who's going to be a year this month...don't know what to buy for her so we just surveying toys, hopefully an educational one @ Toys R Us OU. Found so many of them! Didn't realize that actually since we currently don't have any kids except for the furry one. Lurveee soft toys!

Acting like a kid! But I really love it...so soft + huggable!

Facebook takes over mind and body

PETALING JAYA: Facebook addict Lim said her life now revolves around the social networking website.

Lim, who is in her 50s, admitted to a psychologist that she no longer had normal conversations with her family as most of her free time was spent in front of the computer.

She said she was addicted to Facebook games “Farmville” and “Baking Life” and would plan her daily activities around the website.

Lim said she would start her virtual “crop planting” or “baking” in the morning before work to make sure that it was completed in time for her to resume the game during lunch break.

“I have not had a good night's sleep in a long time as I can't log off until the wee hours of the morning,” she said.

Another addict, who wanted to be known only as Satish, said he logged on to Facebook every half hour.

“If I can't go on Facebook for some reason, I feel uneasy and can't concentrate on my work,” said the 30-year-old engineer.

His addiction became worse after he bought a smartphone

Disconnected from real life

PETALING JAYA: Social networking can be addictive and stunt personal interaction, say experts.

People frequent websites like Facebook due to easy access via mobile devices, but “such convenience is distracting people from having real social interaction with another human being”, said psychologist and counsellor Adnan Omar.

“For example, a couple missed an opportunity to have true interaction with each other by going out for dinner, only to be surfing the Net or checking e-mail on their mobile devices,” he told The Star recently.

It was reported on Jan 10 that a nationwide study showed that Malaysian mobile web users on average spend 20% of their time on social media like Facebook and Twitter, 18% on music or videos, 17% on playing games, 14% on searches for general information and 13% on e-mail.

Adnan was concerned that society might lose its ability to connect with the people within.

“We may know people in Russia but we do not know our own neighbours although they are just one wall away,” he said.

“If you're spending more than 25 hours per week social networking for other than work or academic reasons, you're addicted to it. It does not help that the Internet is readily available and you don't have to turn it off.”

Adnan said addicts had the urge to check their phone constantly and felt “empty deep inside” if they did not do so.

“When people post their pictures and updates, they are waiting for compliments to make them feel fulfilled. The other reason is that they need to kill time and would feel useless or uncomfortable if they do not do anything.

“Technology creates activities but not necessarily productivity although it makes us feel that way,” Adnan said.

Psychologist Dr Goh Chee Leong said the phone has become an important companion for “in between” times like when a person is waiting for someone.

The dean of HELP University College's Behavioural Sciences Faculty said people who often network generally have an active social life although “there are extreme cases”.

Hooked on Facebook

PETALING JAYA: If you prefer to interact on Facebook rather than have a normal conversation, you could be suffering from a psychological disorder, an expert warned.

Gleneagles Hospital Kuala Lumpur neuro-psychologist Dr Nivashinie Mohan said that Facebook Addiction Disorder (FAD) continues to go undetected because most addicts do not realise or want to admit that they have a problem.

With Malaysians spending more hours and having the most number of friends on Facebook, many had become addicted to it, she said.

“A lot of people do not see it as a real problem because they don't think it is as harmful as addiction to tobacco or drugs.

“But it is a problem that needs to be treated like any other addiction that prevents you from going on with your daily activities,” she said, adding that the disorder could cause anxiety and depression.

The disorder term FAD was coined by American psychologists to describe the addiction to Facebook.

Dr Nivashinie said that Facebook addicts had difficulty carrying on a normal conversation with people as they preferred to “poke”, “like” or comment on what their friends posted on the website.

She said the addicts felt the need to be connected to their Facebook friends all the time.

“They fear that they may miss out on something important if they don't constantly check the website,” she added.

On average, Dr Nivashinie said people spent about an hour each day on the website.

“But if you are cancelling plans with friends and family so you can spend the time on Facebook, it is a clear sign that you are addicted,” she said.

She added that addicts usually lost interest in school or were not productive at work because they were constantly on the website.

Stressing that the problem could be very serious, she said: “Sometimes these addicts don't even enjoy logging on to Facebook. They just feel they have to.

“Some people even break into cold sweat at the thought of not going on Facebook for a day or two. And they feel depressed when nobody communicates with them or responds to something they posted on the website.”

To overcome the disorder, she said addicts must first acknowledge that they have a problem.

“It may not be possible for them to quit Facebook immediately or completely,” Dr Nivashinie said. “They can begin by reducing and limiting the hours they spend on the website daily.”

Losing Someone

It's Monday...a manic one and quite a bad one I've ever had. Start the day early in the morning in rush preparing additional materials for presentation this morning and had no time for breakfast. Stuck most of the day in the meeting room watching the presentations and by the time it's over, I received a really terrible, unexpected and sad news that my ex-housemates during my early working days in KL has passed away yesterday. I was really, totally shocked! Can't barely say a word since it's so unbelievable. Never see it coming...

We've been apart and lost contact for almost 3 years since I further my studies. Back then, she was someone who's healthy, watching what she's eating and exercising. Totally looks fine with no health issues and yesterday she has lost her battle to breast cancer after 7 months. It's so sad receiving such news...someone you had been living with for almost 3 years...everything seems to flashback...her giggles, laughs...she's a talkative and a cheerful person I've ever known! Just can't believe that we have lose her. She's only 36.

Why Cats Purr

When our Kiki keep purring loudly, we were always wondering is she having asthma or what but after I watched the Cats 101 show @ Animal Planet, only then I know purring loudly means she is enjoying the massage that we gave her. There's also other reasons cat purr...

As from goggle :

It is understood that cats purr when they are happy and contended. But there are also other reasons such as:

- During tense moments or when they are scared, hurt and even near the death. Scientific research suggests that purring releases endorphins, which are natural analgesics that reduce pain during the healing process.

- Purring often occurs during nursing. The mother often purrs, reassuring the kitten using this tactile, resonant communication. They communicate through the vibrations of purring. A popular theory is that a purring mother can communicate with newborn kittens that are deaf or blind. Kittens learn to purr soon after birth and so their mother can feel them against her body without having to move around looking for them.

Veterinary Perspective - When a cat is purring, it is almost impossible to hear the cat's heart or lungs very well, making examination of vital signs difficult. Cats generally stop purring if they're near the sound of running water. This is why, vets turn on the faucet in the exam room in an attempt to get the cat to stop purring.

Why Cats Lick Themselves

As from goggle, cats lick to keep them clean, to rid themselves of varmints like fleas, to cool themselves, to absorb Vitamin D, and to release stress.

During warm weather, cats lick themselves to keep cool. They do not have sweat glands or pores, so the layer of saliva acts like human sweat by drying and evaporating, lifting heat away from the cat's body.

Cats lick their fur to rid it of dirt and to keep their coat waterproof. The licking also helps strengthen the cat's own scent. By repeatedly licking themselves, cats smooth their fur, thus providing better protection against the cold. When cats tug at their fur, they stimulate glands that release a secretion that helps to keep their coat waterproof. Although cats often enjoy being petted, they will usually groom themselves afterward, in order to rid themselves of the human scent and increase their own scent. Petting also ruffles their fur, and licking will smooth it.

So basically, cats keep licking themselves not because they are a clean freak but it helps to maintain their body temperature based on the current weather.

Lunch @ Saba Restaurant

Off to Saba Restaurant Setiawangsa today for lunch. We opt for the Mandi half chicken with rice @ RM17, watermelon juice @ RM5 and soft drink @ RM2.

The chicken is so tender and their rice is full of moisture. The half chicken portion was quite large for both of us to finish and we end up tapauing. It should be shared by 3 people. Next time we're gonna order a lighter portion.

Renewing Driving License

Went off to the Road Transport Department today in Maju Junction to renew my driving license which is going to expire starting tomorrow. It's located on the 2nd floor. No need to take the Maju Tower lifts, just take the usual escalator in the Maju Junction and you'll find it at the very end of the second floor. Quite a big one, divided into two types of counter. One is for business and the other one is specially for individuals only to fasten the process I guess. Absolutely satisfied with their service. Even though there's more than 10 people waiting before my turn, it takes not more than 15 minutes for me to wait before for my turn...a really quick process. Am so proud of them.

The renewal fee is RM30 per year. Starting this year, the Road Transport Department has introduced a new way to determine our renewal date that is exactly on our birthday that is easier to remember. Those whose birth date is less than 6 months of the expiry date, they will get some sort of bonus that is extra months to complete their expiry date exactly on their birth date.

As for me, since my birth date is more than 6 months and I got extra almost a year, I need to add another RM15 so for renewal of 3 years, the total paid was RM105.

So here I am with my new driving license expiry date = 28 December 2015!

Hachiko : A Dog Story

I've been avoiding to watch this movie for 2 years! My friend did recommend me to watch it in 2010 but I refused to since I know I would be weeping watching this kind of heart warming story. Finally today, I watched it on Astro and like what I expected, I cried watching almost every scene! It really breaks my heart. How the love and loyalty of a dog can be so great. Waiting for his owner for 9 years until he himself died of waiting. Keep thinking about Hachi and I'm sure I'm gonna be emotionally ruined for days!

As taken from goggle :

This heartwarming true story is an American adaptation of a Japanese tale about a loyal dog named Hachiko. This very special friend would accompany his master to the train station every day and return each afternoon to greet him after work. Sadly his master departs one day, passes away and never returns to the station. Hachiko faithfully returns to the same spot at the station the very next day, and every day for the next nine years to wait for his beloved master. During his daily visits, Hachiko touches the lives of many who work near and commute through the town square. He teaches the local people love, compassion and above all unyielding loyalty. Today, a bronze statue of Hachiko sits in his waiting spot outside the Shibuya station in Japan as a permanent reminder of his devotion and love.

Super touching, especially the scene where after waiting so many years for his owner, Hachiko finally sees him at rainbow bridge and they are united together. This show displays how faithful a dog can be, they can be such a good companion(sometimes more human) and they deserve our utmost respect.

See, animals do have feelings too and at times their love supersedes us the humans. This movie makes me love and treasure my cats more and more...

p/s : Trying hard to forget about this sad movie and move on with my life happily (hopefully)

Astro B.yond In Da House!

Yep, we finally decided to had our very own B.yond and the Astro man came to install it today FOC. Currently Astro have 16 channels in HD which the latest one channel 711aka Star World joining the HD family.

Being High Definition, the channels look perfectly superb! The pictures are super clear, you can even see how much make up those actors and actress put on tv! And even their pimples behind all those heavy make ups!

Our biggest dissatisfaction is only on the translation part since there's no translation except for the Korean channel.

Other than that, it was quite worth it to have B.yond. Hopefully other channels will join the HD family bit by bit since without HD, it looks so blur. In the mean time, we'll juz enjoy what Astro can give us currently.

So dear Astro, please put the effort more on the translation part and also adding other channels to HD in the future.

First Working Day of the Year

How was my first working day of the year? By not going to the office...that's how I start my working day...been in bed most of the time and can't barely stand up due to fever and flu. My whole body was badly burning and aching. I guess that's what I need to bear for being healthy for more than a year. The viruses has accumulated waiting to attack my body in one go I guess. But it's okay, at least I have the opportunity to rest.
